    87 325e Clutch options/question

It's time for me to change the clutch in my 87 325e, I believe it has a 8/86 production date but I will check in the AM to be sure. My question is I see clutches online with "springs" built into the clutch disc, and some that don't have these springs, how can you tell which one you should need or is this a single vs dual mass flywheel difference? From what i've read a 87 325e should have a dual mass flywheel. Thanks in advance.

My understanding is the same as yours.

Dual mass flywheel = no springs in the clutch disk

Non dual mass flywheel = springs in the clutch disk

Anyone changed the clutch in an 87 eta and can let me know if it had the springs in the clutch plate?

have you removed the old one yet? Does it have springs?

If you are trying to order parts before you take everything apart, why not order 2 clutch disks, one with springs and one without then return which ever one you don't use.

Plug the last 7 of your VIN into realoem.com and see what it shows for the flywheel. I think you'll find that it SHOULD have an twin mass flywheel. But, unless you know that the clutch and flywheel are original, parts could have been changed on a previous clutch job.

Until you have the car apart you won't know for certain what you have. And a further complication will be the condition of the flywheel. A twin mass flywheel can't be surfaced and usually needs to be replaced when it is time for a new clutch. A single mass flyheel can be resurfaced.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
