I did mine just fine with a 7/8ths inch 1/2 inch drive deep well socket. THey arent in there that tight, and in this case, close enough is good enough, 22mm is .866, 7/8 is .875
I saved 15% on my Bimmer parts by switching to ...

      Search.....

;) It doesn't need to be thin. There is plenty of room around it. It's a 22mm long. Homedepot is open till 9pm.

it turns out i was using too small of a socket, and that made it look like it was interfering with the block. the original one was 23-24mm and i was under the impression that it was a 22mm. i just used the next size up from 7/8ths to get it out, and put the new one in with the 22mm i bought. man i feel like an idiot, especially since i recall reading that some newer aftermarket sensors are smaller than the OEM's, and mine is. oh well, lesson learned.

I know this thread is old, but for anyone searching in the future - the OEM switch I just took out of my 89 325i took a 24mm deep socket. Conveniently the same size as the oil filter stud right next to it (if you delete the oil cooling lines and use the early model stud)
