Fixed a new and large oil leak last weekend

Over the last 2 months I've had an oil leak that has been steadily increasing. After psychologically recovering from the subframe work, I finally put the car up on jacks, cleaned everything off, and looked around. Saw nothing with the engine in idle, so I took her for a hard drive and parked her in idle again. This time I saw oil dripping from 4 locations. I had hoped that the oil was just being sprayed around during aggressive driving, but no such luck. Noticed the oil filter was one of them so with one hand I reached up and attempted to tighten it. Sure enough, my puny software engineering hand was able to turn it rather easily about an inch or so.

That didn't solve all my issues. I was dismayed to find that it looked like the oil was coming from my oil pan gasket in the front and passenger side. @#$%. I was really hoping that my next repair would be easy or clean. Oil pan's are neither.

In a fit of desperation I took a 10mm socket and wrench to the oil pan bolts. Low and behold the first 8 bolts I touched with the socket I could almost move with my fingers. WTF.
So I tightened all the ones in reach, which happened to be where the il was coming from, and now no more leaks.

This adventure makes me want to take my new torque wrench to every bolt on the car, though I don't have a torque wrench for the required 7-8 ft-lbs that the pan bolts require...damnit.

Has anyone else had so many of the oil pan bolts go loose on them?! I know the M42's had an issue with the internal bolts, but hadn't ever read anything about the M20 external ones. Maybe 260,000 miles will do that to a vertical vibrating bolt :)

When I went to replace my pan gasket a number of my bolts were loose. Since this thread just reminded me about this, I am going to check them tonight.

Though I neglected to mention it, this was actually the intention of my post :)

I guess after I finally get around to replacing my suspension in a few weeks, I'll finally start on my oil leaks. Maybe. :D
