running rich ? blowing black smoke

    hi guys

Please lead me toward what is causing this.

something to do with fuel im guessing

the car almost stalls and sometimes does when its cold and i put my foot flat on the clutch.

seems to run fine when im driving and warm but the fuel ecomony is crap,

fumes have also been staining my freshly painted rear bumper :(

Check the FPR vac. line for fuel there should not be any in there obviously. If there is, replace the FPR.

Check fuel pressure. If high, replace FPR.

If still high after replacement, check for a clogged fuel return line.

    Replace ECU.

When in the history of man has a catalytic converter ever caused black smoke to pour out of the exhaust ?

I could be wrong. But black smoke was coming from my friends car when we got launch control set up. The black smoke was from melting his cat.

You may have a shorted harness causing some of your injectors to stay open all of the time.

                    Link doesn't work.

Yes I am an engineer, which doesn't mean that I am a know-it-all. It simply means that I make a living designing machine parts. Checking the coolant temperature sensor was a good suggestion, but I don't agree at all with the cat. convertor suggestion.

As far as your friend's car pouring out smoke. The launch control most likely allowed a lot of unburned fuel into the cat., which caused it to get hot and ruined it by melting the substrate The black smoke is from the unburned fuel that caused the cat. to fail, not from the cat. itself.

might want to put a new set of spark plugs after all this is said and done

Ditto on this for a nice quick ohm out. If in spec check other simply items.

As far as the name calling, that just shows your maturity level.

It is from the unburnt fuel exploding in the downpipe or cat. My guess is that the plugs are fouled out so he has a lot of unburnt fuel doing the samething to his cat. My friends car doesn't have black smoke anymore and his cat is ruined. I'm just putting 2 and 2 together.

My money is on a bad(dying) o2 sensor that is causing the car to run too rich. check you AFM, using the Bentley manual's test. Check for vacuum leaks. last option is DME is shot.

(black smoke issue) many times with these older engines. we get oil leaks. if it blows smoke continuously you have bad cylinder rings if it blows really bad after just idle then acceleration its valve stem oil leaks. wipe down the inside of the tail pipe, if oil separates out of the carbon/ash. you have 1 of the 2 issues i mentioned.
                              Much wow
