interesting problem was encountered last night/this morning.
first a bit of backstory:
Had to remove the fuel injectors to replace a torn o-ring on the #2 injector, had the valve cover off to facilitate removal. Engine was running fine (no noises) prior to removal of the injectors
After the injectors were replaced and the engine buttoned up, the engine is difficult to start, and is knocking like a damn diesel. valvetrain is clear, no missing tools or parts.
Ended up pulling the timing covers off to check for debris, only to find the engine had somehow advanced on the cam two teeth?!?!?! Timing belt was replaced with all sundry parts about 3k miles ago, and timing was re-checked about a month ago, with all marks lining up perfectly.
What the fuck can cause the timing to advance two teeth at the cam, without the tensioner or gears either failing, or having WAY too much slack in the tensioner (spring is intact, bolts were tight)
thankfully, once timing was reset, the engine is still running (at least as good as it was before) so it appears that no major damage was done, although the engine is still slated for replacement later this month/next month
