Fuel pump "sock" orientation

Stupid me forgot to take note of which direction the filter is on the bottom of the in-tank fuel pump (1990 325i). Off hand, does anyone know which direction it should be facing? I am guessing it should point outward from the fuel pump "brace" (that metal brace that runs top to bottom on the assembly)?

Or does it matter?

It points away from the pump support.
