    Funky Idle at Start up!

First of all, this is my first post here asking for help, sorry if this has been covered or in the wrong place! I couldn't find a thread similar to my problem.. I love this forum by the way, it has helped me tons!!!

    Ok, on to my problem.

    Details:
    -1988 325is
-Mostly stock M20 - Bavauto chip, coldair intake, bavauto ignition wires, ansa sport exhaust, thats all i can think that i've done...
-171000 miles, head gasket replaced at 160000 due to an oil leak.
-new idle control motor, new oxygen sensor, new water pump, timing belt, everything new that you would do when a head gasket is done.
-ALL new seals and gaskets - When head was done..
    -New plugs, cap, rotor.
    -New vac lines
-New fuel pump about 20-25,000 miles ago
-Newish TPS, but clicks and ohms within spec

What i'm getting at is that i keep up on the e30 maintenance! I love this car and want it to last forever.

    Problem that has developed:

Car ALWAYS starts cold fine. Car ALWAYS starts warm. But, this is where i have my issue. Every once and awhile, (say 2 out of 10 starts) when i start it warm, it will fire right up idle perfect solid 600-800 for a few seconds then it will drop down to 500 or a little below and bounce around down there. I just sit and watch this, no touching the gas. Then after about ten seconds it will rise right up to where it is suppossed to be and idle solid the rest of the time it runs! Never will stall. No searching for idle speed or stumbling or anything. The car definitely has all its power and has no diving issues. I believe it it some sort of sensor issue, (Fuel and air related) and not mechanical, it runs like a dream - Lots of smooth power! Love it!! But maybe a sensor thats getting old and on its way out???

Things that i believe it could be - correct me if i'm wrong

    - One of the two coolant temp sensors on the thermostat
    - Original mass air flow sensor, still running the flappy one.. I am planning on getting the miller converstion soon!
    - Bad or old fuel injectors? No idea...

Thats all i can think of right now. Anybody have any other ideas i should try out?

    Anything is appreciated! Thanks guys!!

    -Chris.

That could be a bad ECT sensor, a flaky DME, or intake leaks. A smoke test will tell if there are any intake leaks. And yes I know you have replaced vacuum lines, etc., but there still could be leaks.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Just making sure, ECT sesor? Thats the coolant sensor mounted in the thermostat housing? I have a stock same numbered DME i'll put in tonight and see if that solves anything. I did do spray starting fluid anywhere there could possibly be an air leak... that motor is sealed up tight it seems... No jump in idle speed! I had to use this method, as i dont have access to a smoke machine.

I'll let you know what swaping the computer does!

I have a problem exactly like this, so thanks for asking before me haha. Except Mines an m42, and it should idles at 1k(like its set at) then pretty much dies, then shoots up to 1200...

          Go here be happy!
