    Aux fan problems..suggestions!?

So i have a 87 325is..ive owned it since april. In june i noticed overheating issues so i replaced the coolant temp sensor first. (the 2 prong one)
Then i put in a tstat and then I realized its cause when im sitting in traffic theres no air coming through. In august i got a resistor and that finally got the fan spinning. But as soon as the key turned to "on" or as soon as i turned the motor on the fan was constantly on.

In effort not to burn out my new resistor, and just cause i like things working proper I got a radiator fan switch from bavauto.
    part #: 61 31 1 378 073

maybe its cause ive never had the fan working right, but i let the car sit till it got to 1/2 and then to 3/4 and nothing cut on.lol so now that its set up to work it isnt.haha am i missing a piece to the equation??
m20 is plenty. im simply a drifter.

Your aux fan isn't supposed to cool the car down unless it's been wired that way. It's only supposed to aid when the AC is turned on. Your clutch fan is supposed to cool the engine and you might want to check that out instead.

^No. The aux fan has two speeds, the lower for A/C and the higher to assist the mechanical fan in extreme conditions. I agree though that the OP needs to verify proper fan clutch operation first.

wanna bet??..if youre right ill buy u them $20 cluster rings

if im right in that the aux fan IS supposed to assist with cooling when the car is overheating, which is usually in a traffic jam, u can get me the cluster rings!haha

And Yea i do need a fan clutch, i think. im just waiting till i can afford a spal! But when i got the car the aux fan didnt do anything at all. Not even if i hit the ac button. I know for a fact that if im sitting and the temps go toward red it will eventually cut on. the temps are etched on the new aux fan temp sensor.

It turns out when i did my "test" to see if the fan worked, i only let it sit and get warm till it was a little before 3/4. I guess i shoulda let it sit another minute and my fan would have cut on. My friend who has had a m20 for years said it doesnt cut on till the needle is pretty much on the 3/4.

        so this thread is dead.

fan clutch bro, do the newspaper test on it. More than likely after you already replaced the t-stat and the temp sensor, and your still seeing it overheat while stuck in traffic/lights/stopped/etc. and it goes to normal as you drive, then yes the fan clutch is out.

My aux fan has never worked for me while i have had this vehicle, but then again i disconnected AC, and im sure the fan is done for.
