    im stuck, shooooot

    alrighty so, im changing most of my cooling components. just got the water pump done a few months ago and wasn't educated enough at the time to just have them throw in the new timing belt so im doing the timing belt now. and im stuck

    im also replacing my cam and crank seals.

    1.) i already took off my timing belt and i dont know how to take off the cam sprocket/gear.
    2.) is there anyway to change the crankshaft seal (bought the entire kit from blunt) without removing the actual crank? i read somewhere that you can but they didnt say how.
    3.) i had some sort of buildup in my expansion tank, whats a good way to clean it out?

    To remove the cam gear you have to remove the bolt going through the center of it. If the rotor is still installed (it shouldn't be since you should have had to remove it to remove the upper timing cover) you need to take it off. After that it's two bolts to remove the camshaft seal plate.

    The crank seals are replaced by removing the front profile plate. To do this you'll have to remove the big crankshaft bolt and the balancer/pulley key, as well as the oil pump sprocket if I remember correctly. Then it's 3 or 4 bolts to remove the front profile plate.

    The camshaft, crank, and oil pump seals are all pressed in and will need to be removed. Removal is a lot easier since you're not worried about them remaining intact.

    As far as cleaning the expansion tank, I figure a wire brush and some warm soapy water would do the trick.

      I should of elaborated a bit more. My bad. I can't really remove the actual cam gear because when I try to loosen the bolt going through the center, it keeps going off TDC.

      Isn't the crankshaft bolt torqued down at 300lbs or something? That's the issue I'm having with that....I'm also afraid its going to take it off of TDC.

      I'll def give that a try for the expansion tank.

        Hold the cam gear while wrenching on it, that's what I do. As for the crank bolt what a lot of people do is put a breaker bar on it and turn the starter. Obviously that's not possible since you've already removed the belt. The cam gear has a pin that will realign it where it needs to be when you reinstall it.

          Yeah dude, good luck with the Crank nut. Ive heard some horror stories.

          My brother was unable to get the one on his 24v with a 4 foot breaker bar and two guys standing on it. Took a machine shop to heat it up and use a 500 ft/lb gun on it.

            I've read that there's a way without taking off that crank nut which makes no sense...lol just thought I'd throw it out there and see what's up.

            As far as the cam gear goes, how did you hold it? I've tried with hand and it didn't work. I think the last person who worked on it might have put it on too tight esp bc in the Bentley it says its a hex bolt and I have a 10mm holding mine in -___-

              The only way you're going to get the cam sprocket nut off safely is with a 3/8" impact.

              To do the crank seal you will need to pull the front cover off of the engine. No, the crank will not need to be removed but please note that the oil pan gasket rides on the bottom of the front engine cover. If you remove the cover I would highly recommend doing an oil pan gasket as well. It will likely not seal again.

                PS: Unless something strange is going on a good 1/2" impact gun will take off the crank nut.

                  Would likely have to remove the front bumper and valence for this. I can't think of any other way to create enough access unless you pull the motor.

                    The cam sprocket is held on by a Torx bolt. I just removed it by hand 5 minutes ago (in process of doing my T-belt). it was easy. Held the sprocket in place with the old T-belt to the crank, with car in 5th gear.

                    How the hell do I remove the old cam seal from the cam seal plate? It's tight in there - I tried hammering it out with a big ole socket from the back. no luck yet. Advice?

                      OK, got the old cam seal out. That was a bit ugly. Support it on both sides (under the ears, with the boards as close as possible still allowing the seal to pop out) on 1x2's or 2x4's, whatever, with sharp corners (for more support - you're working with pretty thin aluminum). Bash it from the back in the groove with a hammer and screwdriver at an angle toward the outside and you'll catch the metal lip on the inside of the rigid seal. I destroyed my seal so I'm going to use a 36mm socket to tap the new one back in.

                      don't put the screwdriver on the metal - you'll mess up the sealing surface.

                        i finished the cam seal, workin on cleanin my expansion tank out and contemplating if i wanna go thru the headache of the crankshaft seal.... lol
