    Water pump replacement question

    Hey all,

(and yes, I used the search function before making this thread)

My water pump is dying (making funny noises and leaking a little), so I bought a new pump.

I've always heard that you should replace the water pump, timing belt, and tensioner pulley at the same time. But my dad had the timing belt and tensioner replaced about 1000 miles ago (maybe even less) and for some reason didn't replace the pump. Do I need to replace them all again? Or can I just put on my new water pump?

Please explain your answer too, I'm trying to learn how and why these engines work, not just a list of stuff you're supposed to do just because.

    Thanks

no, you don't need to replace your timing belt unless you see wear. just double check everything and dont try to stretch it off, slid it off. i'm really surprised you didn't change the water pump when you did the timing belt.(you are the only one ive head of not doing both if the pump was old.)

while its off check your fan clutch. changes are its worn and needs to be replaced and its easier to do both at the same time.
    Much wow

      Thanks!

And if I had done the belt myself I definitely would have done the pump too. The car goes back and forth between me and my dad, and he had a local shop do the timing belt... and I guess they didn't know to do the pump at the same time...

it is recommended to change the pump every other timing belt service. 4 years or 60k. miles. so I guess it was the 2nd time around. :-)
