    Quick ECU Swap question...

I just got a chip that is for a 153 ecu which is i thought i had... Turns out i guess mine is a 173 from the PO which is for Motronic 1.3 instead of 1.1 Mine reads 0 261 200 525 Am i correct in assuming this??? Also , can i just get a 153 ECU and swap it back with the chip??? Thanks for any info...

Yes, you can swap a 153 DME in for any of the later Motronic 1.3 DME's. Idle may not be as good and the stomp test will no longer work.

Thanks JLEVIE for a quick response... Just a few more things.. Since its a Bavauto chip would i reap more benefits with the chip and a 153 than i would with just the standard 173 that i have in there now?? I would imagine it would be better right? Thanks again..

My experience with 153 & 173 DME's is that there is no difference in the performance of the stock units if both are operating correctly. However, these are twenty'ish year old parts. The guts of a DME are digital and essentially not affected by aging of components. That part of the DME either works or it doesn't. But the interface between the digital heart of the DME and the engine is analog and those components do age. That aging will affect how well a given DME operates and thus how much power the engine produces.

When tuning a Spec E30 on the dyno we bring a half dozen or so DME's (typically 173's) to the dyno. The first part of the session is spent running the car with each DME to find the best one or two parts. It isn't unusual to find that one or two DME's produce horrible results. We mark those as bad so that the salvage yard we borrowed them from can discard them.
