Do you mean that when you switch the key to "on" that you are not getting a momentary CEL as part of the system check? In newer cars that indicates that the ECU is not getting power. I had this happen once in a Toyota and it was due to a bad ECU relay.
If you don't see the CEL illuminate with ignition on, but have spark, fuel pump operation, and injector firing when cranking the engine the bulb is probably burned out or there is a problem in the cluster or wiring. A no-start condition then is likely to be a fuel delivery problem or intake leaks. But a timing belt failure is also a possibility.
Look under the oil filler cap and see if the cam is turning when cranking the engine. If it is, check the rail fuel pressure with a gauge tee'd into the inlet line. And check for injector firing with a noid light.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I have done all but the noid light. It is an 87 and lacks the c191 connection that USUALLY is the culprit in this scenario, however the 87 325is is hardwired there. I think it's the DME personally and my spare DME I gave away about 4 months ago before I bought this car. '
Little background for u Jon, bought car with broken T belt, got a head for it, just got it buttoned down yesterday.new head set et al. This is the 6th time I have R&R'd an M20 cylinder head as well. All of those started right away without question. Well this one I DID NOT take apart initially it was done by the PO before I towed it home.
I set the timing, it's dead on, I supervised the head install (had drink in hand)
And it all went fine. Fuel lines were backwards at first and ( feed is at FPR now not return) and the wires were on the cap wrong order but I found and fixed all that.
I do not have a noid light but I don;t think my injectors are firing. I have a Peake Tool I will get tonight from my friends house and see what it reports.
I'm stumped on this one. The E46 started first try and had not one service indicator light after a complete motor....

Another thing was the ECT sensor was broken off and stuck in the plug. I got a new one and it is blue not tan like the original, I am going to switch it out with a tan one from the eta and test it.

Ok I am not getting fuel coming out of the return so I pulled the regulator and no fuel to it, and it goes all the way to 95lbs when cranking.... Swapped with FPR from parts car eta and same thing......starting to think DME is not issue.

If I understand correctly you have the fuel supply line connected to the FPR. That is wrong. The fuel feed line connects the the fuel rail and return line connects to the FPR. If you have those lines backwards no fuel will reach the injectors and there will be no return fuel flow.

Yea he had them like that he said they looked bent like they went there but I swapped them and reset the FPR in good so no more leaks after that.
