So today was not fun. Went to grab lunch at noon and my starter just made a machine gun sound. The battery is fully charged and I have a brand new alternator.
After popping the clutch to get it running (thank god these are light cars), I had a person pull up next to me and ask if I was in reverse. :-? I get out, sure enough no matter what gear I am in the reverse lights are on, that's new.
Then tonight I head out to Ski Chalet, about a 30 minute drive into gaithersburg. 3 minutes after leaving the house I notice that my temp needle is PEGGED in the red. By this time I am :hitler: and :eeek: I got out, making sure not to shut the engine off because I know it won't start back up. I checked the coolant, level is OK and it is not boiling. Felt the hoses heading into the thermostat and out, hot out, cool in. :loco: Everything seems ok.
I get back into the car, and the needle is now magically at the center. :loco::loco:
The wife and I got her some new snowboard boots, I pushed and she popped the clutch to come home. The whole ride home the temp gauge indicated red, but was fluctuating up and down slowly as if the thermostat was opening and closing. I stopped and unplugged the temp sensor, needle shot to low, plugged it back in and it pegged again.
Finally got home after a very quiet, very nervous ride and shut off the engine. For giggles I turned the key on immediately and what do you know, the needle is now at 1/4 temp.
So, in one day, starter failure, reverse lights always on, and temperature sensor reading incorrectly. I checked the main ground on the front left of the block and it is ok.
Where are all the grounds? Mind you I just put this engine in 3 days ago, and have driven it for 1 tank of fuel. The first time I started it I had the starter issue, but after messing with a few connections it fired right up... Until today.
Also, I have 2 small wires that IIRC, were both hooked up to the trigger terminal on the starter. One doesn't seem to have an effect, IIRC it is a blue wire. Any ideas?
Anyone? :(
Edit to add: One of the past owners of this vehicle swapped it to manual.
