Odd Question (Starter)

I have an 84 325e. The starter noise is noticeably different than my 87 325i. My friends at work have been making fun of me saying that it sounds like my 84 is dying... LOL. Is the starter from an "i" reverse compatible to an "e"???

Maybe, up to 12/86 a 1.1kW starter was used, after that a 1.4kW. It would probably fit and just juice the motor a little better.
