    fuel leaking

A buddy of mine went off a bump and now he's leaking fuel

he told me he was going 40 and out of no where launched..

the gas guage started dropping, steam coming out of the engine bay, fuel trail

    Any ideas

Any weak points in the fuel system?

    He has a 1985 325E

And its slammed, exhaust hangs about an inch off the ground.

    probable faults:

-cracked fuel tank (metal or plastic?)
    -fuel filter busted/disconnected
    -fuel line cracked somwhere

notes: engine bay did smell like gas

Add a busted FPR to the list, mine was a fountain when its interior seal tore.

Your friend of lucky it didn't catch fire if fuel was leaking in the engine bay.

You're going to need to follow the trail, simple as that. We can't diagnose this over the internet because we didn't slam the car in to whatever it was. The fuel tank is metal by the way.
