Thank you sir. If I am reading the ETM right, if I replace the bulb with a good one, then my only other guess would be a possible faulty ignition switch?
Your starter caused the alternator not to charge?????
My issue is that I am not getting the exciter signal to the small terminal of the alternator to make the field coil engage. The signal comes from the cluster at the battery indicator light. It looks like the ignition switch sends the signal to the cluster, then to the alternator. This all started happening after I shorted across the solenoid posts to try and engage my starter when it wouldn't start the other day, thinking I had a bad starter. Ii think I opened a can of worms......
I dont think it is between the cluster and the alternator. I still haven't been able to get the battery indicator light to come on, so that makes me think that the issue is power supply to the indicator light. I need to take another look at the ETM and see what supplies power to the battery indicator. This has become quite the problem.....
OK all. Had a breakthrough today. After I studied the charging system diagram and consulting with one of my techs today, I found my issue had to be between the bulb in the cluster and the ignition switch. I found that the blue connector on the back of the cluster is connector C1 and the wire that sends power to the battery light from the ignition switch is wire 14. It goes through the cluster to the bulb and resistor and then sends the exciter signal to the alternator through wire 16 in the same connector. I probed the connector at pin 14 on the wiring harness and have 12 volts with the key on. I put a t pin into pin 16 in the same harness and powered it with 12 volts with my test probe, alternator started charging. That tells me that I have no issues with the ignition switch or the wiring, since when in the run position I have 12 volts coming into the cluster for the battery light and power runs through wire 16 to "excite" the field coil to make the alternator charge. Good news is that I have no wiring issues. Bad news......something is wrong with my cluster. Guess I need to source a good cluster now.
