pulley wobble - fan clutch/water pump/pulley?

    pulley wobble - fan clutch/water pump/pulley?

    I have an 88 325ix and am ready to do the timing belt and water pump change. However, I noticed that the Alternator belt has a slight "Wobble" to it. With the car running, the alt pulley looks to be running true but the wobble is there. The crank pulley is running true as well. I do see the fan has a slight wobble to it as well but nothing that is causing the fan to hit the shroud or the rad.

    Question: what could be causing the "wobble"? Is the pulley between the fan and the water pump is bent? The water pump is on it's way out (shaft bearings shot or the shaft is going out)?

    I should have all my parts from Pelican by tomorrow.

    It could be the 4 bolts holding the pulley to the waterpump, or it could be the waterpump bearing like you said. If its weeping out the weephole a lot then the bearings are probably shot.
    The fan clutch, waterpump, and alternator all share the same belt so wobble will be evident in each of those if something is off.

    Whatever it is once you get in there and take everything apart you will find out whats going on.

    After removing the pulleys (waterpump, crank pulleys, vibration damper) check the flatness of them by placing them on an absolutely flat surface, then try to run a feeler gauge under it.

      There is no weeping at all from what I can tell and no loss of coolant or overheating... but that's not to say the pump might not be on it's way out.
      Can I just check/tighten the bolts on the pulley as is, or do I need to remove the fan or other things to do so?

        Why don't you just DO the timing belt/water pump change? Inspect components while you're in there.

          I am going to.. just want to make sure in the few days till I have time to do it, the components won't go kaboom! :blowup:

            You'll be fine. Worst case is that you have to wait for a new pulley AFTER you took everything apart :).
