Well my car can run my friends 89 WITH the 2.93 rear, dual mass flywheel, and stock eta exhaust.
True, the valves will hold you back a little bit, but my car is totally different. There is even more low end, and the motor doesnt stop pulling. With the I cam it really pulls over 3500 all the way up. I dont notice any drop off up the rpm range. I wouldnt swap in an i motor and loose my torque and fuel milage.
However, the largest gains were noticed after I switched to motronic 1.3. I had power increase with cam/port work/valve springs, but with stock chip it wasnt a wow of an increase. Id imagine it would run much better with an aftermarket chip.
My ideal set-up would be a 323i head on the 2.7 block, and motronic 1.3. I believe this would put out at least 170 maybe 180 crank. Hopefully if we ever get to it I'll be able to get my car on the dyno soon and tell you how it does.
