    DME part numbers

does the part number for the dme determine the version of the software?

I recently diagnosed my car as having a bad dme (rough idle, ran REALLY rich).
I swapped in a good one from another car and confirmed that the original dme was bad.

my original dme has part number 0 261 200 027 (1986 325e). I found a programa rebuilt one on ebay, no luck. the car doesnt even fire the injectors with this dme. the seller had an original dme and swapped it for me. this dme also didnt work with my car.
both of these dmes had the same part number as my original one and confirmed to be working before they were sold.

Someone on r3v sold me a dme with this same part number and it works perfectly with my car. I'm very confused with the inconsistency of the dmes. Is the software different even though the part numbers are the same? this would be good to know for the future in case the dme craps out again.

If the part numbers are the same, the DME's are the same. Either you got your hands on some dead DME's or there is a problem with car. One bad DME I could see, but that is too many. I think you need to look further for the problem.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
