    Head Rebuilt, Running Issues.

    I recently refreshed my cylinder head, new stock cam, new rockers, valve job, and the head was machined still used standard head gasket. I had the work done by a reputable shop. I put the engine back together.
    When i start the car it wants to stall out unless i keep the foot on the gas and it sound rough. at 700 rpms its chuggy. at 1000 rpms its a little shaky. at 2000 rpms its really shakey and cant really rev passed that because im afraid too. Replaced the intake gaskets with new ones already and have checked for vacuum leaks. Is there a vacuum leak that i could have overlooked. The car smells like an engine that is running rich also. what else could it be?

    There are a bunch of places other than the intake gaskets and places you can easily check to have intake leaks. With that set of symptoms the first things I'd do would be to make darn certain that the cam timing is correct and then smoke test the intake.

      I checked the timing marks on the crankshaft and the the cam roller 4 times when i put the timing belt on and the cam roller will only go on one way. is it possible that the machine shop put the cam in incorrectly? i am not 100% familiar with camshaft installation and the assembly that is between the cam and the cam roller.

        There is no way to put the cam in wrong.
        The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
