    yet another stroker/turbo/engine management thread

okay just to start out i've been in the e30 game for a little over a year now and i am considering a stroker turbo build. my car is an 87 325e with the i head swap and 1.3 motronic (my car is a bit of a mystery since i found out it already had the i head swap and was running on motronic 1.0 when i got it, but whatever). i like it a lot, but i want more.

i am about to pick up two m20b27 engines (not running) for $300, basicly just for the blocks and cranks. i've been reading the metric mechanic 'booklet' about their rally and sport engins also their piston and crank combinations.

GOAL: well, there is the problem, throughout my daydreaming and making parts lists i find myself saying,"well if i'm getting that, i might as well do that too." and then $1000 jumps up to $5000 haha. That's where i need some help, what i really want is a reliable turbo daily driver that will drive all calm in traffic, but on the weekends i can go out and terrorize the streets haha I just want a very usable 400hp, which i know is well within the reach of a properly blueprinted stroker turbo build.

Budget: i know no turbo build will be cheap, i don't want to cut corners, but i also don't want to go way overboard. i'm thinking around 6-7k for everything.

i just have a few questions to start out and help make up my mind on a few things.

what kind of engine management should i go with megasquirt, or WAR chip? or something else?

turbo. just use one off a diesel truck or a t3/t4 hybrid or what? turbos are something i am not too well informed about. i know i don't want too bad of a lag time, but i also don't want to drive around in boost all the time.

I appreciate anything that will help me out, links to other build threads, books to buy, whatever will help.

    Thanks in advance.

So you want a reliable and reliable high horsepower setup that drives like stock? Better be ready to fork up some cash. If you want that much power on a stock internal motor, I would at least refresh the bottom end with new rings, bearings, etc. but that is just me.

    Use MegaSquirt.

Read Maximum Boost by Corky Bell to decide which turbo you want.
