low power and huge consumption problem

i got this summer an 88 e30 320i with the original 2.0 motronic engine. i got for it a new timing belt water pump distributor cap idle regulator and i noticed that the only car i beat in a small side by side race was an 08 ford fiesta 1.4 with 80 horsepower and that got me thinking. i eliminated the cat and it's just straight pipe to the muffler because i thought that it could be clogged.
the consumption is 15 l/100 or 15mpg and not enough power there was a strange travel to the clutch pedal i had the clutch changed will check tomorrow how the car pulls(my mechanic told me that is was because of the worn clutch but it did not skip yet it just smelled)
so have you got any idee why this engine runs like this?

From what you describe, it really can be anything (engine-wise). Check for intake leaks, and if those are good, test any sensor that has to do with the fuel management. Does the engine idle smooth? Is it rich or lean? Hesitation, bogging, misfire, etc? We need this info to even provide help.

thanks for taking interest unlike other people. it idles ok i don't have any problem in that chapter, it does not misfire. i will check the sensors with a tester next week. there is also another thing i forgot to mention, when i give it wot the revs grow very hard also last summer i got new spark plugs
here i uploaded a video from last summer wot from 2nd to 3rd in a tunnel

i have 2 thinks that i think are wrong first the o2 sensor i checked on the internet about the symptoms and they match exactly or maybe a problem with the injectors i took one day the exhaust off the mid section to the back after an hour waiting for the car to cool down and it still smelled heavily of gas

You know, that seems about right for a m20b20. Keep in mind it does not have much power to begin with so yes, it will take some time for it to climb up the rpm range.

yeah but normaly it should have like 130hp and i could barely win a drag between a ford fiesta 1.4 80hp. soo...you mean that i lost over the years 50hp? that can't be right or even the huge consumption

A new O2 sensor wouldn't hurt anything if you have the money to swap it. Vacuum leaks can cause weird symptoms as well.

actually alot of smaller cars new ones atleast have very little hp but move pretty quick(also being automatics) they have the drag race advantage. my 318is is fun but it makes me sad seeing mid sized sedans pass me by-_- doesnt happen in my m20 but yea i feel what you're saying.

If the car is only getting about 15mpg when driven on the highway, something is wrong. And what ever is causing that is going to cause a loss of power.

The first things to do would be to have a smoke test run to check for intake leaks and repair as indicated, adjust the valves, replace the ignition wires & plugs, and run the fuel system tests. Verify that the engine is running at normal temperature (80C) and that the engine temperature sensor is good. If mileage and power don't improve, have dry & wet compression tests and a leak down test run.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
