    Engine Idle and rev problem

My engine seems to idle really low. It'll idle at 600 RPMs and then go down to 450-500 RPMs when idling. It could be that the idle valve is dirty I haven't checked. My engine light is on all the time too. The code that it gives me when I check whats wrong is 1222. I have no idea what that means.

(There's also a grinding noise I can hear towards the middle of my car when I'm sitting in it. The grind is relative to the low idle when the revs drop.)

Also when I'm in first gear and I give it a little gas from a stop the engine revs go down to as low as 100 RPMs almost dying on me. I've stalled many times from this thinking that the pedal response would be on time but theres a long delay and then I let the clutch up to early.

I caught it one time, I revved before letting the clutch up because I had a feeling it was going to happen and I held the gas pedal down for at least 3 seconds before the revs started building up.

If anyone knows what is wrong please let me know ASAP. It's annoying to drive around stalling all the time because there that delay with the revs and the pedal. And I feel like the engine is going to die on me every time I'm sitting at a red light.

    Thanks.

Ive had a similar problem, did all this.....problem GONE!

    -Check for intake leaks
    -Check spark pugs/wires
-Clean out the ICV with carb cleaner
-Check the C191 Multiplug, twist to open plug make sure theres no corrosion
    -Replace fuel filter
-Put fuel injection cleaner in gas tank

Sounds to me like some classic FPR symptoms.

Look at the vacuum hose on the FPR. Smell it.
Does it smell like gas in the hose?

I'm sorry, I'm really new to all this haha. It's my first car. What's the FPR?

here it is on the M20B27:

          and on the M20B25:

Yours will be in one of these areas above. Just remove the vacuum hose and check for signs of fuel. There shouldn't be any fuel in there, only air. If there is a replacement is necessary because your engine is being flooded.

            wow you know whats weird?

My vacuum hose to my fpr is very tight. not loose like that.

I definitely want to diagnose it now.

I dont have symptoms like this at all, i have a wandering idle when cold.

I do not understand what that thing is doing theres no fuel there... that is the intake its attached too... the injectors point the other way...

I would have swore that was the brake booster...

fpr failure is very uncommon. but its possible. air leaks would create a surging idle. as would a faulty idle switch or sticking or faulty idle control valve. possible air flow meter?
or ignition system fault id say.

The fuel hose coming out of the FPR is the fuel return, therefore the FPR limits the amount of fuel returning to the tank. The vacuum hose helps to regulate the flow depending on throttle load/presence of vacuum.

But, like e30leigh said, you must rule out the other common possibilities as well.

OOOOPS, I never said what an FPR was. IT is the Fuel Pressure Regulator.

Thanks for all the help guys. I took it to a mechanic to fix up the entire car. Can't wait to get it back. Hope everything works properly!
