Its actually the knocking related to the poor oil pressure. you could probably put in a new pump and it would still come on. Your oil pressure is developed by the movent of the bearings against their seats. I changed my pump and still had the same problem, was time for a rebuild(bad connecting rod bearings) now after the rebuild all good. Ticking is normal in a m20, knocking is not.
