Need a lil help from you E30 GURUs

When I purchased my E30 a couple weeks ago, the check engine light was on. I checked the code and it was 1221. I found a DIY using a O2 from a ford mustang. I followed the procedure but found that my origional o2 was a four wire and the replacement was a 3 wire. In the DIY it says to just ground the grey wire to the chasis. I did so and I'm still getting the 1221 code. Any ideas will be appreciated.

You could be getting that code now because your ghetto rigged sensor just isn't right. Get an a direct fit sensor meant for the car and replace the O2 sensor relay. The clear the fault code from the DME by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. If the code returns the cause is likely to be from an upset in the A/F ratio. Check the rail fuel pressure and have a smoke test run.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

So I replaced both the o2 sensor and the relay and now getting a 1222 code lambda. Is there any DIY on the smoke test? I've called a few shops local to me and when I ask about a smoke test, they act like I'm out of my mind.

It may not seem like it, but you are getting somewhere and the 1222 codes is indicative of an upset in the A/F ratio.

The problem with trying to DIY a smoke test is the need for; a smoke machine that can pressurize the intake/block with 2-4psi of oil (long persistence) smoke, something to plug the exhaust with, and an adapter that goes where the AFM connects to introduce the smoke. The cheapest smoke machine that I know of is about $1000.

Wow! Okay so it looks like the search continues for a shop to complete the test. Thanks again for the drop of E30 wisdom.
