'89 325i smoke and idle issue question

I have an 89 325i that has recently jumped time and bent valves and broken rocker arms, but that isn't what my question is about. Before this happened, the car was smoking from the exhaust. It was constant smoke that didn't really change much under different conditions. The car also had idle issues. It idled extremely high when first started. At stop signs, before it had warmed up completely, it would sometimes die while idling. I just took the head off and the headgasket seems to be fine.

My question is what may be causing the smoke and could it be related to the idle issue?

Color of the smoke was?

Blue-ish hue, pretty sure it was oil smoke. I can see that pistons 2-3-4-5 have burnt oil on them.

Really I'm just trying to figure out if it's valve/head related or ring/block related. I'm changing the head anyway so wondering if this will also fix the smoking problem.

well now you have it all apart... so its kinda late for a leak down test.

you said it smoked under all conditions
how did the car feel?

need more history of the motor i would think.

but another 2-300 bucks and you can have a all new bearings and rings and a surfaced head.
your already this far you know?
