My dad just refreshed an M20 as the same time as he did a 5 speed conversion on a 89 325i.
By refreshed I mean:
Rebuilt 885 head and bottom end from a reputable machine shop.
Problem:
Car has a misfire/hesitation at idle. The sound is almost a "puh-puh" and sometimes shakes the interior a bit. When you are driving it, it has plenty of power and seems to smooth out. We checked the valves, they are adjusted to spec.
We have tried known good:
Swapping AFM
Injectors and rail
cap/rotor
spark plugs(They were slightly wet with gasoline)
multiple ICVs
FPR
o2 sensor
We are at a loss of ideas, and frustrated.
