So my buddy who is pretty familiar with the e30's told me to pour some seafoam into my gas tank, vacume lines, and oil. We then noticed the carbon that gets burnt off is supposed to come out only through the exhaust but my car was smoking in the engine bay. So we figured there HAS to be an exhuast leak somewhere. Could this be relevent to the noise?

My car also failed smog the first time, and technically will still not pass, i ended up paying for a new cat and still failed so i ended up paying for a reaaaaaaallly leniant smog if you know what im saying - idk if this gives any clues as to what my problem is but i thought id through it in there.

so you're just throwing parts at the car now?

Get a smoke test performed. Then start worrying about replacing parts. If you cant pass smog and theirs no ce light you're not burning efficiently I believe.

If you had smoke coming out in your engine bay then you might have found your vacuum leaks already if you had been observing the origin of the smoke. Otherwise, PERFORM A SMOKE TEST before you do anything else to your car. You'll be amazed at how smooth your car can run without any vacuum leaks or how rough it runs with leaks.
