If the engine starts when cold, the START signal wire isn't your problem. Intake leaks or a bad ECT sensor are where you should look.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

So the green wire from c104 doesn't need to be hooked up to anything? Is the ECT sensor blue and does it matter if its on the lower or upper part of the housing?

Whether the START wire from C104 needs to be used depends on the engine harness used.

The ECT is the blue topped sensor and it normally is the lower of the two in the thermostat housing. I don't know that it matters a lot which position it is in.

The harness is from an 88/07 i. I put it in my 87/04 e it has the white 3 pin connector. Tach and eco are hooked up just not pin 2 (green)

I believe the 88 harness has the START signal spliced to the Hot in Run and Start circuit that feeds the ignition coil. So that wire on C104 isn't needed. If that wasn't the case the DME would not run and thus the engine would never start.
