    oil pump drive rod thing

    OK so I was changing my oil pan gasket today and took the cap off my oil pump and found some chunks of plastic, one of the chunks was the orange ring around the rod that drives the oil pump.

    My question is what does the orange ring do and where would I find a new rod for that, because I know they don't come with a replacement pump,

    It's called a stopper and acts as a washer between the rod and gear wheels. There should be one on each side of the rod.

    You don't need to replace the rod, just the stoppers. Definitely replace both since one has already failed. Part #: 11411280950

    Pelican Parts has them for $0.75 ea.

      I just did my oil pan gasket last week. There were no signs left, as far as I could tell, of such a washer, and so I didn't think to replace anything. Exactly what does the washer do/prevent? The car has been run for 50 odd miles so far now without harm. Will the rod just wear down faster? Or am I lucky?

          Also how long do oil pumps last? Mine has about 200k on it and I don't have a extra 200 to buy a new one

            i think you can take them apart and clean them that should extend its useful life a bit

                It acts as a bushing to prevent metal on metal contact in a moving mechanical system. It's always a good idea when you have the potential of metal rubbing together to have some sort of bushing/bearing/etc.. but since each end isn't moving relative to the gear wheels, it shouldn't be a big issue if they're missing.

                  So is it ok if the stoppers are missing? Or just 1 missing? I removed the pan and 1 was on the bottom of it... gonna see if I can get it local tomorrow.. if not I am probably just going to put it all back together because I don't want to pay 8$ shipping for a 75 cent item.. I am using sealant so I don't want to have to mess with this until I swap my engine in a few months.

                    Exactly this. They're supposed to be there, yes, but they aren't critical. I replaced my pan last week and they were wrecked in half. Car ran fine before and the pieces of it weren't in the pan, which means when my gasket was changed out before I got the car they had already broken then. If you already have everything taken apart and don't mind waiting order them from Pelican, otherwise you're fine.
