    CAI Idle Issue

I looked pretty damn hard both on this forum and the rest of the internet but can't find anyone whose encountered the same issue that I'm having.

I hooked up a cone filter to the AFM using a little converter so it would fit. For some reason every time I try to put this type of setup on my car, it REFUSES to idle fine. Smells like it's running rich too. I've seen other M20s with the same exact setup and theirs run normal. I am going to put in a heatshield as well.... but at this point I think it should at least run properly? Anybody have pictures of their CAI setup? I'm officially stumped. It just idles up and down severely but if I try to give it any gas it wants to stall. I don't even want to test it out again because I don't want to damage my car. Thanks.

EDIT: Thought it would be worth mentioning that by unplugging the ICV, the car idles normally.

You aren't going to increase performance with a cone filter. The stock air box is already a CAI if all parts are in place and with a fresh filter it will perform as well or better than anything you can do. The only benefits to a cone filter mod is looks and a bit better sound.

The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Yes, obviously I already know that. I've seen other CAI setups with a cone filter that operated fine without this issue. All I was asking for was either a picture or description of how they did it. That's it.

Put up a picture of your setup.

Here you go. Like I said, I looked at a local E30 guy's setup and its exactly the same with no issues. Flipping the ICV around or just unplugging it stops the car from surging/running super rich. But it still losses power when I really step on it. I can even drive if I keep the RPM under 2&1/2ish.

You also deleted the velocity stack that the AFM requires.
My car ran rich cause it had a kit like that on it.
I later made my own and had shop fab me up a velocity stack to work with the AFM
Then I bought a Miller MAF and my eyes opened...

Trust me, I'd just buy a miller too if I had the cash. When you say velocity stack- you're talking about the square tube that goes above the filter right?

EDIT: Okay I looked up some info on the stack needed for the AFM. Looks like that's my problem. Thanks man. Just gotta figure out how to make a stack myself & I should be all set.

I got your PM about the stack I made.
Yes the square tube above the filter is the itme i was talking about.
I dont have nay pics of my stack and I no longer have it sadly.
So what I did was i took the cheap plastic adapter down to an exhaust shop/fab shop. The made a plate with a square the same size as the one on the adapter.
Then I took the plastic piece and roughly figured out the volume of it using (gasp) math.
Then I figured how much pipe Id need to get the same volume roughly. The shop then tinkered with the pipe to get it to match the square hole on the plate.
Then I simply drilled my own holes and bolted it up and off I went
This seemed to cure my rich idle and restored a bunch of midrange power.

Understood. So the stack you fabbed up went exactly where the old one did? I guess my only discrepancy now is what it went inside of... was it located inside tubing attached to the AFM?

Think of the adapter you have that lets you put the silicone hose on. Take that ans make it bigger/longer. Make it the size of the square plastic thing that was in the air box.

I discovered all the issues I had been encountering had nothing to do with the intake. It was just a faulty AFM that's been giving me trouble since I've had the car. I got it repaired twice but I' just going to replace it now. Thank you for your time.

Good work. Though I hope you havnt spent as much on AFMs as a Miller kit costs?
Oh and the pipe I built made a performance improvement thats honestly why I made it.

Nope, I ordered a refurbished one for $60 through Autozone. I was tired of my car having an achilles heel so that takes care of that. When I get back from Basic Training I'll probably just end up buying the Miller setup but this gets me where I need to go for now.
