Truly odd no start issue/ fuel pump relay

Hi all... I have a newly aquired 89 325 ix, been fixing it slowly... It has failed to start recently, and I just had this issue... Testing, I jumped terminal 30 and 87, fuel pump relay, and everything worked... Opened up the relay to see if anything looked burned out, and it looked fine so I plugged it back in, and the damn fuel pump kicked in in the key off position, just like I had it jumped... I unplugged the relay and turned the engine over and the damn fired an fired and ran for a few seconds... First time in two weeks... It died pretty quick but wtf!!!! Hehe... Anyone have any thoughts, imput?

Ok quick follow up... I swapped out the relays... So now the fuel pump stays off when it should... But cranked it with the relay in and then pulled it and cranked the engine again... All of a sudden the engine catches, starts and runs for a few seconds... Dies...

Tee a gauge into the rail supply line and see what the fuel pressure does when you crank the engine. Also hook a test light to the output of the fuel relay so you can tell if there a problem in the fuel system or with pump power.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

        +1

In addition to this, it's easy to check the connection/power at the fuel pump.

This may be an obvious question, but does the car have the correct relay?

Thanks for your impute guys... Swapped out the relays... And the third one worked... Hehe... Car starts and runs.... I didnt say great but progress in the biggest pita Ive had with an e30... Seems like I solve one issue to find the next, all the way down the line... Thank god for patience and junk yards! Now to replace the power steering... Leaking like a sieve, and toward the back end, grinding clunking... :D

Anyone in Los Angeles have a spare rack and pinion?... Spacifically an e36 m3, but any old rack will do...
