do I really need this on the throttle body..

im building a turbo M20, and this is badly corroded on my M20b25.
I suspect its just to aid with cold starts in the snowy parts of the world, doesnt have a wax element inside, it just goes in and out and heats up the throttlebody.

question is.. having this on a turbo vehicle where the desired intake temps are as low as possible, could this have a negative effect on performance, I was going to get a new one but not sure if its worth it. Otherwise I will just plate it off so it looks neat.

I live in Australia, aka the center of the sun.

Its not going to make any difference to your intake temps or performance. You can just bypass it with a length of hose. There is no wax in there, its just for coolant to circulate around.
I think its there to stop the throttle body from icing up under certain conditions.

It's a throttle body heater. I bypassed mine a while ago and never noticed a difference. Though, this past winter my throttle did get stuck open once or twice. Nothing a firm kick won't fix.

Bypassed on every car I own that came equipped.

It is counterproductive to good performance.

Probably a left over design from when they still made plane engines. :hitler: Most cars have them now a days though. Not gonna notice a difference if you remove or bypass it though.
I have friends who are EOD bro.

That's awesome. I have friends who make coffee for a living, but you don't see me rocking out a bunch of lattes

you can bypass it. as someone said, it's entirely possible to have your butterfly valve freeze open in very very cold and wet conditions but it's unlikely.

if it get's below 20F you need it. otherwise it's just over designed.

Just run a hose from under the thermostat to the back of the block.

Or you can take a double sided nipple fitting, remove the hoses from the throttle body and connect them to each other.
