Had a mechanic very briefly listen to it and his first assumption was that the top end is not getting enough oil....is this common? Does one of the pickup tubes normally get partially clogged?

While there could be a blockage of the oil feed to the head, that passage is fairly large. Low oil pressure, a blockage in the head, or a plugged spray bar seem more likely.

Rockers typically break where the fork for the eccentric starts.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Ok, removed valve cover and adjusted the valves again, this time went a hair tighter. They are all within spec measured on the valve side. Also removed the oil spray tube and flushed it with solvent to make sure it has no blockages, then blew compressed air thru it. Just pulled all the plugs which look good (there only 6k miles old.)

Also wire brushed and re-gapped plugs an reinstalled. Next step is dynomatting underside of hood and that's it, nothing more I can do.

I've come to the conclusion that the ole m20 is getting tired, and will never sound the way it did new 25 years ago.

align the Line on the crank pulley to the v groove in the timing cover. Don't listen to the OT on the balancer. I set the line on the crank pulley a few mm pre-tdc then go over the intermediate gear, the cam gear, and slide it over the tensioner.

Only way I know is you gotta tear the front down.
