    Strange Whistling/Hissing Sound

Over the last few days I have been noticing a weird sorta whistling or hissing sound coming from somewhere towards the rear of my engine... It was just barely noticeable a couple days ago but has gotten a bit louder and now it almost sounds like the car is supercharged. The sound increases as the rpms go up and it keeps going for a split second or two after I shut the car off and audibly fades out.

It was dark out when I got home last night so I haven't had the chance to start taking things apart yet but just listening to it seemed like it was coming from the exhaust side of the engine, sort of underneath the intake manifold maybe? It also seemed to be towards the rear of the engine and it doesn't seem to be dependent on the temp of the engine either. Anyone ever had an issue like this? I'm leaning towards a vacuum leak somewhere but if anybody has any ideas where to start hunting that sucker down it would be a great help.

Yeah, mine sounded like a turbo!
You've probably got an exhaust leak.
    No antenna? I sell plugs!

Could be the alternator. An alternator with shot bearings will sound like a turbo/supercharger.

Get a smoke test done. Sounds like a vac leak.

Instead of guessing, use a stethoscope to locate the source of hissing noise.
