    gasket rebuilding a m20

looking to rebuild my motor, but nothing to crazy. just wanna replace as many gaskets as i can and get this back together. i have a general sense of what i need to replace, but i want a list i can check off. some i dont even know what to call- so any help is appreciated.(id rather just buy a rebuilt motor for $600-$800 but im having no luck with anything near me) i want to drop it in and have a non leaking/ strong m20. i dont need nothing fancy- just need it done. i have much more im doing to the car and i dont wanna mess with the motor right now- but i guess im forced to.

so far i have the head removed from the block, and all the timing covers off the block. not looking to tear down the motor anymore than it is.

i need a good name brand for a HG. i had bought a HG kit before and the VR HG has given me nothing but problems since i installed it.

figure i can get all the exhaust gaskets, intake, valve cover in a kit, but i want a better HG. will be getting ARP bolts.

i dont know where to get the rear seal on the block? i dont know what to cvall it but it was really dirty back there and i figure i should knock it out. plus since i removed the lower timing cover i believe i need new seals for all that stuff. i dont even know what i need to replace so im hoping there is a kit you guys can refer me to.

new water pump, thermostat housing,TB and pensioner will be installed aswell.

am i missing anything for the front or rear of the motor? i wanna buy everything at once so i can just do it.

the head will be sent out to be checked, thinking i just replace the umbrella seals and valve keepers, or should i do more? everything looks fine, but not looking to do a full rebuilt or spend a lot of money on this.

thanks for looking and please point out if i left anything out. i have a lot going on in my head right now with getting married, finishing my brothers project and mine etc... thank you

Sounds more like a reseal than a rebuild. A rebuild would mean piston rings, main and con-rod bearings, oil pump overhaul, etc.

An engine rebuild kit would have most, but not all of the seals and gaskets you need. Since I presume you are trying to eliminate oil leaks, what needs to be replaced are:

        Front main seal
        Intermediate shaft seal
        Oil pan gasket
        Rear main seal
        Oil return tube seals
Oil filter adapter seals & thermostat housing seals if the car has an oil cooler
        Camshaft seal & o-ring
Valve cover gasket & rubber bungs
        Etc.

As to the head gasket, in almost all cases a used head will have some warp that must be removed by a surfacing cut. While the head is off the valves should be ground and new seals installed, at the minimum. Depending on wear, other parts (valve guides, valves, cam, rockers) may need to be replaced.

The OE torque to yield head bolts are more than good enough for a normally aspirated M20 engine. While some folks seem to have problems with VR head gaskets, I've used a number of them with no problems. But arguably the OE gasket from your dealer would be the best bet.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

thanks man. im looking at the upper and lower gasket set for M20 that Ireland Engineering has. only thing is, they don't say what they will include. i dont wanna wait for their package just so i know what else to order. takes up too much time.

There's a good reason for that. Sometimes warehouse stock can vary in availability. The website is all done manually here and not automatically plugged into the warehouse stocking system (too many accuracy problems on the older cars). If you call and request a certain brand it usually can be accommodated pretty easily (this tends to also apply to many other resellers as well).
