So just few days ago my car began to over heat badly reached the red mark so I began to disarm my whole cooling system I found out that it wasn't my radiator, water pump, fan clutch nor my thermastate so I've come to a conclusion that it might be my head gasket? I haven't been able to reach that part yet but has this happened to anyone? And if so what was your problem, need help on what it could he and what I should check. Thanks

Why would you think its the headgasket? are you loosing coolant, have white exhaust, see oil in your coolant or coolant in the oil? If it overheated badly the head could have been warped and now the headgasket wont seal properly. -
Not losing coolant and it ain't throwing white smoke but I have check my water pump and it works fine, thermastat works fine, radiator works fine, fan clutch is new so at this moment ibam clueless and out of ideas on what it can Be. What do you suggest it can be? HelpComment

Dude, check your SI board/batteries before digging more into your engine. Have you verified overheating with an IR gun?Comment

yea check all the above mentioned. anytime it comes to cooling issues such as your water pumps and thermostats are pretty easy to replace so it wouldn't hurt to do it, plus the parts are cheap.Originally posted by evandaela car is a car. call it a dildo, i'd still drive the hell out of it.Comment

No I did not check it with the ir gun. I did a visual inspection. I took the whole coolant system apartComment

i have a feeling its the thermostat. What Jim said is what I was trying to ask. There is no way to visually verify a working thermostat.
Here's what I would do. Take your thermostat out and put the thermostat housing back on with no thermostat. Run the car and see if it gets hot. It should barely make it to the first white line of the gauge. If it still gets hot, then we now know that it isnt the thermostat.

instead of trying to do some crazy ideas about swapping thermostats and driving an over heating car... take the thermostat out and throw it into a pot with water and bring it to a boil. you can confirm it's opening this way instead of risking overheating your motor and blowing a head gasket.i have a feeling its the thermostat. I have faith that the OP would be smart enough to keep an eye on the temp to keep from hurting anything. I know m20 thermostats are finicky and like to get stuck open or closed. Most likely, his is stuck closed.
OP, go with whichever method you're comfortable with and report back with your findings. I am willing to bet money it's a thermostat issue.
