    No Fuel

87 325E Not getting any fuel, cannot even hear the pumps coming on

    - the lifter fuel pump has been replaced (new, right out the box)

    - the fuses all check out (no blown fuses)

    - swapped out the fuel relay with the o2 heater relay (should be working)

    - still a quarter tank of gas

still nothing, still not getting fuel and still no noise from the pump

    thoughts?

Check for voltage right at the fuel pump terminals...with key on, obviously. A test light would probably suffice if you don't have a voltmeter.

The fuel pumps only run when the DME sees timing data from a rotating engine. Listening for the pumps with the ignition on means nothing. If a test light check does not show power to the pumps at fuse 11 when cranking the causes could be:

No power to the DME (main relay or fusible link) or a bad DME ground
      Bad timing reference sensors
      Bad DME
      Bad fuel pump relay
      Bad fuel pump fuse

If there is power to the pump circuit when cranking, but no fuel at the rail a bad transfer pump, bad high pressure pump, clogged filter, or wiring fault are possibilities.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

so the fuse that checked out... blew out #11
        -replaced it

car fires up fine and had full rev range (using the throttle body under the hood). get in the car and drive it down the block fuse blows.

what would cause it to run fine when using the throttle body under the hood vs. the go pedal in the car

          found it
-hot side wire for the fuel pump was arching on the trailing arm/subframe and shorting the system
