    Diy ftmfl

    ok so i changed my timing belt and head gasket and water pump. not my first time. replaced all the gaskets i could along the way. made sure all the timing marks lined up before installing the belt. put her all back together and now she idles ROUGH. at first when i cranked it, it would die almost immediately. after a couple of more cranks she started to idle on her own but really rough, sounds like a muscle car with a heavy cam. im afraid i fudged up the timing on the re-install but maybe someone can throw anther theory my way before i start tearing it all apart again?

    Timing sounds like a pretty solid bet to me.

      Did you turn the motor over manually a couple times to check?
      1989 325is / 2.7, 274 cam, e30 M3 5-lug

          Did you check the timing manually before putting it together and/or since starting it?

            turn the crank over like 4 or 5 times and make sure the marks are spot on, sometimes the marks can be lined up but when you turn it over it shows that it was secretly off a tooth, I've noticed the belt tension can throw off the reading whe you first put it on, I've never messed up the marks but I can understand how its possible if your not super careful. Just use a large wrench on the bottom end to turn it over, its easy with a big wrench, no need to pull the spark plugs.

              Make sure all the injectors are hooked up too. one injector not fully contacting can foul up how it runs quite a bit.

                Turn the engine over by hand by using a ratchet and socket to make sure your valves and pistons get along.

                  so do i have to remove anything to check the marks? also how do you tell if its off by a tooth? and if it is off how do i fix it? :(

                    thanks for all the help guys. i really am stuck :( also, idk if it means anything but it keeps telling me im low on oil but i checked the dipstick and its fine.

                      LOLOMG my girlfriend is sitting right here and I got in trouble for that.

                      But really, in the future, turn it clockwise a couple times and make sure both marks line up. I usually try to set it a tooth advanced so that it catches the slack in time.

                        ok so at this point ive got the engine all back together. now i have to tear it all back down and remove the timing belt, align the marks, then re-install and put it all back together again?

                          Feeling the love from you guys on here lately! Running bad like that though, more than likely it's a tooth off. You are going to have to tear it apart as mentioned, give it a few cranks by hand and double check the marks.
