common vac leaks on m20s?

    common vac leaks on m20s?

    So this morning when I was driving the GF to work, she mentioned that the car sounds kinda funny first thing in the morning. I usually pass this off as being "just the way it is when it's started cold" but then I agreed, that this car never sounded like that before I put i the car in storage.

    I was thinking that it could be the intake elbow...so I replaced it. Now I seriously think that the friction-fit hoses are not all as tight as they should be.

    So aside from the intake elbow, are there any other places vac leaks can occur? My car surges lightly when started cold, and sputters heavily unless I let it sit idling for about 20-25 seconds. Then there's this persistant sucking noise as I rev the engine lightly. The dipstick seems to be sealing ok as well


    any help is greatly appreciated!

    The complete list of possible causes of an intake leak is:

    Intake boot
    Throttle body gasket
    ICV hoses & connections
    Brake booster, hoses, and connections
    Crank case breather hose
    Evaporative control hoses, valve, and expansion tank
    Fuel pressure regulator & hose
    Injector seals
    Valve cover gaskets & bungs
    Oil filler cap
    Dip stick o-rings
    Oil return tube o-rings

    While leaks in some of those can be found by inspection or by spraying carb
    cleaner on suspect areas, not finding leaks that way doesn't eliminate the
    possibility. Only a smoke test will really work.
    The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      ugh! this damn thing is nothing but one thing after another! I just had the cam seal and the valve cover gaskets replaced..soon I'm gonna need another valve adjustment too...it just never ends!

      I can see the appeal of just swapping out the aging, m20 and putting a newer, less mileage engine....M50? etc.
      If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

        Don't despair man. Every motor is going to need maintenance at some point. It's just the way it is. My car has been sitting for a while. I did a whole lot of things to it to get it back up to spec (I keep my car in the burbs). The next time I came back to it, I realize the oil pan gasket is leaking pretty badly. Superrr annoying. But I remember that it's about due for it to be changed, so what can ya do. Hahah it's a tough game.

          In addition to the list from Jim, check the elbows going into the throttle body. They have a tendency to come loose.
