CEL comes on after 1 hr of driving?

The check engine light is coming on in my 1988 325 Super ETA after an hour of freeway driving. I have no CELs if I drive in town at 45 mph. Unfortunately I am getting no response from the stomp test (Motronic 1.1). I do have a 173 ecu with a performance chip I could swap from my 1993 vert, but I don't know if the car will run and if the stomp test will work if i swap them. Any ideas on why I'm getting this odd CEL or if I can swap out the ECUs to make the stomp test function?

The 173 DME won't run your engine properly and any fault codes you pulled from it are likely to be erroneous. The DME in the car doesn't support the stomp test. So to find out what code(s) is stored you need to have the car scanned by someone with the right diagnostic system
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Jim, thanks. Any ideas why I'm getting a CEL after extended highway driving?

Could be any of a number of things. Seeing the fault code(s) will narrow down the possibilities.
