    Stomp Test Reliability for Emissions Diagnostics?

    Hey everyone, so I failed emissions, like apparently a lot of e30's do according to my searches :D. The car has 186k on it, and the PO had new plugs (Autolites, but probably gonna change to ZGR5A's), air filter and fuel pump put in. I was way over on my HC's under load, and a hair under the limit at idle, here's the read out:



    I tried the stomp test as a prelim to possibly point me in the right direction, except it came back 1444, or no errors! I'm definitely not complaining, but does that definitively rule out things like the o2 sensor and possible leaks? I'm new to this stomp test thing as I never had to mess with it on my e36 and my e28 didn't have such wizardry.

    I'm about to order new plug wires, plugs, distributor cap and rotor since like I said above the plugs are Autolites and the plug wires look ancient. I'm also thinking of replacing the thermostat and coolant temp sensor as a preventative measure (might as well since I have to do tb/wp, adjust valves, gaskets, etc.).

    So what do you guys think? I can't find any threads of people failing emissions without codes being thrown so I'm not sure what to look at replacing other than the ignition stuff and possibly the cat if the new ignition set up doesn't resolve the issue. Let me know if I missed something in my searches as I'm trying to soak all of this new system in. Your guidance is much appreciated!

    The AFR has to be pretty far off to cause a fault code. Well further off than enough to fail emissions tests. Furthermore, an aged O2 sensor (over 100k) will erroneously indicate a lean mixture than actually exists, causing the DME to increase fuel over what it should be.

    If the O2 sensor is past it's scheduled replacement point of 100k, replace it. I'd also check rail fuel pressure, put the right plugs in, and replace the ignition wires & distributor. Oh yeah, and adjust the valves.
    The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      Thanks! I didn't get any history on the car when I bought it so no way of knowing how old that o2 is, might as well st buy one.
