325I m20 redlining at 4/5k rpm(solved) Now significant lack of power.

Hey guys. A problem has come up on one of my e30s and im having trouble diagnosing it so im looking for some second opinions on the matter.

Last week i purchased a newly refurbished afm because my previous one was causing my car to run very poor and very rich and there was notable lack of power. I swapped my buddies on and it took care of the problem hence the new afm i purchased. but since installation my car is now redlining around 4/5k rpm with backfire seeming to be running to rich because of the backfire.

The car has a brand new cps sensor as of July 22 2013 so its pretty much safe to say that isn't the problem. There are also no vacuum leaks.

Any second opinions on where i should look next?

    Thanks in advance

The AFM isn't a factor above 4500 rpm. Above that with the WOT switch in the TPS closed the DME is using only engine & intake temperature and rpm as inputs. Check the the TPS to see if both switches are woking.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

So i swapped out the TPS and it did not make a difference.

The car is throwing the engine code "1222" which means one or more of the following could be bad:

      air leak
defective Air Flow Meter ( AFM)
      bad engine temperature sensor
      incorrect fuel pressure
      problem with injector(s)
      defective evaporation system
      empty gas tank
      issue with spark plugs
      problem with valves

the afm and temp sensor have already been replaced with new parts. and i have also changed the o2 sensor and that also made no difference. the car has no air leaks.

      anymore ideas im running out.!!!!

Aftermarket CPS are known to be shitty, is yours a BMW or OEM unit ?

i believe it was a duralast unit from autozone. Ill warranty it and see if it makes a difference.

I swapped out the CPS and it is still misbehaving in the same way. redlining early running rich and backfiring.

Sounds just like my M20B23 that has a BHG.

So part of the problem is solved. the reason why the car was redlining early and backfiring around 4/5k rpm. the crank bolt was lose so the disc the cps reads off of was wobbling and the timing was not advancing.

So the bolt has been tightened and i am able to run through the gears but there is a significant lack of power...? car is throwing a 1444 code which means everything is fine... i wish i could say it was.

Anyone every face a problem like this? any ideas?
