    M20 Failed Emissions Testing

My '90 325is failed emissions testing twice because of high CO levels. I assume this means the car is running rich. I put some of the CRC "guaranteed to pass" in the tank and that did not help the second time.

The car runs well and I get about 24mpg combined. It does have a slightly rough idle and will sometimes idle high (1k rpm) until I blip the throttle. It drops back to the normal, slightly rough idle after blip. I assume this is caused by a vacuum leak so I checked my intake hoses and found no damage. I also tried the propane test while the engine was running and was not able to find a vacuum leak.

At one point, I did have a stored code (no CEL) 1222 but upon recent stomp test, the code is no longer displayed.

Sometimes the car will take a few more cranks than usual on a hot start and will sort of sputter to life. It will still idle the same though. Also, a few weeks ago I did hear a whining from the fuel pump area although that no longer occurs.

Can anyone help me diagnose my rich running condition from these symptoms?

I have attached a picture of my vehicle emissions inspection report.

if its any correlation to you, im running a 1986 325e with an i exhaust, cats removed, and chipped.

i passed inspection/tail pipe sniffer here in NJ.

so you must be really over the limits since i believe that PA is more lenient with their emissions.

Have a shop run a smoke test for vacuum leaks. What shop did the emissions test, randazos or Murphy's? They are the only two in Lansdale with emissions dynos anymore.

Pep Boys in East Norriton. They've actually been pretty good to work with. Letting me come back for a third time for free.

Don't forget the waiver if you don't pass after the third time. Spend $150 or more on emission related parts/repairs and they give you a waiver for emissions.

I did that on my last inspection, I think I bought a new ignition coil, tune-up parts, etc...
