    noooo start

    ok: 1992 325ic

Saturday as I was pulling out of bojangles, my car sputtered and idled roughly momentarily and then died. Acted like it was out of gas (I have almost a full tank). Pushed it into the gas station parking lot across the street. after cranking it a couple times, I got her to start, idled fine, gave it some revs, idle returned to normal. Got out to shut doors and she died again. Had it towed back to my house. A couple months ago my fuel pump died, and I replaced it with a working used one. It was doing the same thing it did when my fuel pump was bad, so I went to fuel issues first. I got it to start twice since the initial die outside bojangles, but both times it would die shortly after. Since it was starting, I was ruling out spark. I wasn't hearing the fuel pump kick on, so I went ahead and picked up a walbro 255 my friend had at his shop, since he said he'd buy it back from me for his car if that wasn't the problem. Swapped it in, still nothing. checked for fuel, all is good. So I went to spark. Not getting spark at the ignition coil, couldn't check at the plugs since I didnt have a spare spark plug handy. I'm grabbing one at work today, as well as borrowing a crank position sensor test light.

recent maintenance: timing belt and water pump 3 weeks ago. spark plugs new within a year. fuel pump new, fuel filter new within past 3 months. o2 sensor replaced within past 6 months.

Aside from the CPS and plugs, any ideas on what to check next? Any help is greatly appreciated! Been borrowing my roommates mk3 golf... I want my car back!

Check your AFM for signal, check out your used fuel pump, check the regulator, cps?

I just talked to one of the techs at work, he thinks it's the cps. Apparently if it goes bad it would not only cause it to not have spark, but the fuel pump wouldn't kick on either. I didn't know a bad cps would cause that. I'm going to borrow the cps tester, and grab the spare cps we have here at work in case mine is bad and then go from there. AFM is good, fuel pump wasn't turning on though so I didn't check for pressure at the fpr.

i had the same exact symptoms when my CPS went bad. i replaced so many things that where much more expensive before the CPS. It was a pretty simple to change out.

Can you verify the used one is bmw or at least OEM ? Non-OEN Aftermarket ones are poo poo.

              It's a bmw one.

Having to top off the coolant tank when the light comes on every week or so... Haven't noticed any coolant leaks in the engine bay... I'm starting to worry it's the head gasket. Oil appears fine, haven't seen any oil in the coolant yet either... occasional white smoke out of the exhaust.

thankfully, no more white smoke... It only did it a couple times after I changed the cps and the spark plugs yesterday. But it didn't really smell sweet..

I was low on coolant this morning, and didn't have any laying around so I put water in there. two damn gallons. it kept disappearing. at the end of my 20 min drive to work the light was back on and reservoir tank practically empty.

I'm doing a leak-down test on my lunch break.

pressure test revealed the culprit. Lower radiator hose. -__- I guess there wasn't enough pressure while driving and idling for me to see where it was coming out. a/c belt was rubbing against the hose. put a new hose in as well as a shorter a/c belt so it didn't have to be all the way up on the adjusting bracket.

                              this! <$20 vs $1000

Laura, check all your hoses, if you haven't replaced them do all off them. blunt did me a solid on the whole set and they were good quality, so id recommend calling him.

if your hoses look bulge-y then they all need to be replaced.
