    Cooling issue

On my way home from work today on the highway, my car began to nearly overheat but I have no heat in the car. I got off the highway and into a gas station parking lot when the needle was just barely in the red. I wait for the car to cool down. I refill it with some coolant and begin to drive back home and the needle doesn't go past 1/4 of the way but have no heat. Does anyone have any idea what this could be from?

Yep, the odds are that the heater core and part of the engine & radiator are full of air.

The question would be where did the air come from. In this particular case if there has been no recent work on the cooling system, I'd immediately suspect a small head gasket leak that is pumping air into the cooling system.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
