    Head gasket

Does anyone change their head gasket as a means of preventative maintenance? Is there a common interval? I'm at 170,000 and thinking about using a spare gasket while I'm at the timing belt.

every 12k miles or 1 yr -> new valve cover gasket, after valve adjustment
only gasket change I found in regular maintenance checks, apart from the part they say to see if others are in good condition. (Haynes service and repair manual)
I'd recommend you do a compression test first.

its not worth it unless you have almost everything else off and its just the head studs left to remove

unless it's leaking, dont touch it. if you pull the head you will be spending $300+.

you will need to have it machined. then new BMW head bolts and Goetze/BMW head gasket. along with valve guide seals and intake, exhaust, thermostat gaskets.

        imo the M20 needs a full rebuild at 200k-220k miles. a proper rebuilt m20 stock w/o a chip will own a 220k+lightly moded m20.
        Much wow
