    Oil intermediate shaft bearing

Hey guys, so I am tearing down my spare ix engine and after pulling the intermediate shaft I noticed the bearing is pretty shot. I've done some searching and it looks like the part number was removed because of some sort of warranty issues from people replacing it improperly. Does anyone know where I could get a replacement/part number and how to put it in?

    The bad bearing:

While I did not write the following myself, it's a summary of what I've found across the message boards and from dealing with it personally.

"Hot tanking will ruin the intermediate shaft bearings. They can be replaced, but it isn't a trivial job. The block can be sufficiently cleaned w/out hot tanking and unless the bearings are already bad I would not want to have to replace them.

    1. Contact Local BMW Dealership and request the two following parts:

    BMW# 11-11-1-280-863
    BMW# 11-11-1-264-196

    2. Take the engine and new bearing to the machine shop of your choice and have them do the following:

--Measure the IM shaft diameter, chuck the bearings up in a lathe, slow speed, cut to initial size. Use a standard cam bearing installation tool and install them in the block, they will crush and become smaller then the diameter of the shaft. Hand finish with a brake cylinder hone, low speed and a little goes a long ways. Test fit, finish sizing with green scotch brite.

--make sure the front bearing lines up with the oil feed hole from the #1 main bearing
feed (The second bearing does not matter as it is fed through the shaft from the front journal)

--You want about .001-.0015" clearance,002" max. Anything more then that and you risk loosing too much oil pressure."

See this thread for part numbers. They can still be ordered even though the pn isn't listed in the catalog anymore. The bearings are press in and need to be reamed to obtain the proper clearance to the intermediate shaft. Judging by how trashed that bearing is i'd be worried about what you intermediate shaft looks like. Be aware that ix intermediate shafts are different than rwd e30's. The ix shaft spins opposite direction.

Thanks, the shaft looks fine surprisingly, only the bearing is torn up.

              Going to bump this.

After some searching the inner bearing (BMW# 11-11-1-264-196) is readily available from a lot of places, I got mine from pelican parts.

The outer bearing (BMW# 11-11-1-280-863) is a different story. The bearing is on back order from Germany at any of the dealerships I went to and they didn't know if or when it will become available. All of the online sites I usually go to (blunt, turner, pelican, etc) say the part is out of stock or NLA. After a lot of searching I found eeuroparts.com They showed the bearing being available from their warehouse. I placed an order for two. After a few weeks I was starting to give up, but after over a month I finally got an email saying my order has been shipped YAY!!! The bearings got here a few days ago and they are the correct part!! I checked their website and the price of the bearings has since tripled. I think if you are planning on rebuilding an m20 you might want to order these bearings before they go completely NLA. I suppose its easier for regular m20s just to get another block with good bearings but its harder for me having the ix specific block. Well that's my story, hope this helps someone.

              Cheers,
              Ray
