    HG replacement q'n

Ok, so I am getting my HG replaced by a very reputable and knowledgeable shop in town, great guys, stupid low prices (cause the mechanic loves my ride :D)

Anyway, I need my HG done. I have the OEM BMW e30 HG for my car. I know there are other gaskets and seals I need to get the job done, so here's my q'n:

    Is it cheaper to

1: get individual gaskets and seals for the other bits and pieces

    or

2: get an entire VR HG set and use everything except the HG?

Also, should I replace or reuse the head bolts? (not sure if you can use these again)

    thanks

The head bolts are torque-to-yield and cannot be reused. If using the OE head gasket, just get the other OE gaskets, and new copper plated nuts for the exhaust manifold and down tubes.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

i use all the seals in the VR HG set. but it does not come with the cam o-ring seal. and i cant remember if it comes with valve guide seals and rocker shaft plugs. both of these should also be replaced as well.

get new head bolts from BMW. they are one time use.
you can use the Goetze or BMW headgasket. they are about 99% the same.

            Finally got my car back

After the HG was installed, as well as machining the head.

Turned out in addition to the bmw HG, VR HG set, head bolts, WP, TB, I also needed a new rad, as my old one was actually expanding outwards on the bottom. I've never seen a rad do this, but there were several fins missing too.

The machanic took time to properly clean the VC while everthing was apart and swapped out my dip stick, to the older style M20 stick which is far easier to read.

At the machine shop, they took to time to clean the carbon outta the valves. Really imroved the performance of the old girl.

After all this work, the car runs smoother (adjusted valves too), shifts nicer (he added metal washers to the linkage), cooler (ever since I got he car in 03, I've been struggling with a creeping temp guage), stronger (from the head cleaning) and possibly more efficiently than it ever has in my possession.

Feelin pretty good about the old girl. Nice to have the old engine fully sealed up from top to bottom and front to back.

Now to tackle any hidden rust I can find!

you need to re-bleed your cooling system. sounds like you have an airpocket. or you have a bad fan clutch. but most likely the first issue.

jlevie has posted how to do it in many places.

Sorry, I meant it was creeping BEFORE I got the car back from the shop. The mech I use races these cars regularly, so he's very aware of how these cars work and cheap/ free mods (it's like having the r3v search engine in his head, evertime I chat with him).

Phenominal guy, who charged me a mere 866 incl taxes incl the rad.

Can't get a deal like that anywhere, esp. not those indy "BMW" shops!
