Won't break anything. The oil pump has a mesh filter on it, worst that can happen is it gets sucked up onto the filter

So I bought a 3lbs telescoping magnet and could not grab anything in the pan. So I ended up starting the engine and driving around a bit....it didn't blow up.

So I went back and changed my oil (I only had about 30 miles since I changed it last week lol) and there was that pesky washer stuck to the drain plug.

I hope I don't have to take the oil pan off again...I just replaced my gasket less than a year ago.

I'd try fishing it out with a magnet. Let us know what else you come up with :)

Awesome, thanks for everyones input. Im going to try the magnet idea, if I come up empty I'm just going to cross my fingers and forget about it.

And if something does happen, it gives me more reason to get started on swapping out the m20.

it's not going to get sucked in the screen. it's going to sit there in the bottom of the oil pan.

If that little washer is enough to stop your oil flow, you had a huge problem already.

I've also read that there is a filter on the oil pump (probably not a replaceable one) that would prevent anything substantial from being sucked in. If you get a strong enough magnet im sure you can have it pulled from the same hole, not sure if it would slide through the oil drain plug (dependent on size).

it's a wire screen to stop big particles(such as washers lol) from being sucked up, but that doesn't mean that it won't stop flow.


doesn't the m20 have a place for oil level sensor? how big is that hole? Either way, you'd be on the right track to get that washer out before it causes oil starvation issues, or somehow gets thrown into the rotating assembly.

You should be able to drag a powerful magnet along the outside of your pan to move the washer and either fish it out the bitch hole or, if its small enough, it might drop through the drain hole

i've found all kinds of stuff in the pans i have changed for people. as long as they are small i havent seen an issue.
